FOUNDED BY SE1 UNITED MEMBER IN ORDER TO CHALLENGE THE NEGATIVE PERCEPTIONS OF YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE PUBLIC SPHERE

The Youth Oskar Awards take place each year in the Southbank Centre. Twenty youth groups from all over London nominate twenty young people who they deem to have exceeded the expectations of their peers either academically, artistically or in sports or who have served as an example of inspiration to the young people in their community.

The event was originally set up in 2007 by a 15 year old SE1 United youth committee member who wanted to challenge the negative perceptions of young people in the public sphere in order to present a more rational, realistic and rounded perception of young peoples’ lives in London.

With performances and presentations from celebrities and an audience of 250 people, the event is an exhibition of the hard work and dedication delivered by young people striving to realize their ambitions against the odds as well as a celebration of young peoples’ positive contributions to our society – stories that are seldom told when we see the word, “Youth” in our newspapers.
