A PROJECT THAT ALLOWED AT-RISK YOUNG PEOPLE TO VISIT AN ENVIRONMENT IN WHICH YOUNG PEOPLE HAD DEALT WITH VIOLENCE

Kosovo

In 2010, amid the youth-on-youth violence that was dominating the news in south London, the young people in SE1 United were eager to deliver a project that allowed at-risk young people to visit an environment in which young people had dealt with violence.

When discussing this with the Youth Committee, Kosovo was raised as a destination in Europe with a high proportion of young people under the age of 25 and a young nation recovering from the effects of a war.

Visiting a host of young groups in the area, this environment and the experiences of the young people who the group met were ideal to enable exploration of the effects of violence on peoples’ formative years.

Speaking to parents who had lost children and young people who had killed people during the war, members of SE1 United learnt about the affects of violent behaviour and the importance of projects that deal with community cohesion.
